The official Treadmill of the
(Boston, MA April 11, 2013)
The Boston Athletic Association, host of the world's oldest annual marathon with stringent qualification requirements, and ProForm® Fitness, the number one brand of treadmills and other fitness equipment, announce the ProForm® Boston Marathon official training treadmill.
"ProForm® has developed the first treadmill which brings the realism of the road to treadmill training," said Thomas Grilk, Executive Director of the Boston Athletic Association. "We look forward to working with ProForm® to introduce this exciting new product to runners and especially Boston Marathoners."
The treadmill is available for purchase at www.proform.com/bostonmarathon.
Special features for runners separate this treadmill from the pack:
The fastest runners maintain consistent running mechanics. The ProForm® Boston Marathon treadmill introduces the first ever, patent pending Speed Ring™, which uses Bluetooth 4.0, the newest wireless communications technology.
The runner wears the SpeedRing™ on his finger to change treadmill speed without breaking stride. Because the Speed Ring™ adjusts speed in one-tenth mph increments, it's the perfect training tool for fine-tuning your optimum pace.
The Boston Marathon is about performing at elite status...and the new official training treadmill enables fast running like no other.
The treadmill's top speed is 15 mph, which translates to a 4-minute mile just slightly faster than the pace expected from next year's Boston Marathon leaders. This treadmill offers the first ever 15 mph speed on a home machine that runs on a standard 15 amp home electrical circuit.
Running downhill at race speeds is worth prepping for and this treadmill's incline range makes it convenient to train.
Elite runners have the quickest cadence the number of times the foot strikes the ground in a minute. The optimal cadence is between 170-190 steps per minute, counting each left-right foot strike independently. A cadence less than 160 steps suggests a runner is extending his or her leg too far forward in each stride, thus slowing momentum. The solution? Increase cadence by increasing leg turnover and shortening the stride.
The ProForm® Boston Marathon treadmill includes three features to increase runners' cadence and improve race times.
This fresh design eliminates arm rails that may feel confining and constricting to an experienced runner, and moves the motor to the rear of the expansive 62 x 20-inch tread belt, creating the ultimate wide open road.
Training programs on the new ProForm® treadmill are designed to help more runners qualify for the historic race. The B.A.A's coaching staff has contributed to the development of the training programs.
"There are many different ways to train for the Boston Marathon, and we've been waiting for the right partner with treadmill expertise," Michael Pieroni said, head coach of the Boston Athletic Association Running Club. "ProForm® worked with Boston Athletic Association® resulting in a new training protocol that offers a level of customization previously not available."
Marathon training programs will be available for advanced, intermediate and beginner levels with programs for 16 and 20 weeks at each level.
Watch the historic course in HD video on the treadmill's 10-inch tablet integrated into the console. The treadmill will automatically incline and decline to match the elevation every mile of the race from 6% decline to 20% incline.
The ProForm® Boston Marathon official training treadmill is an internet-connected device with built-in Wi-Fi with a 10-inch tablet integrated into the console.
Created as "smart" fitness equipment, the treadmill is compatible with iFit.com, a performance training website owned by ProForm®. iFit® allows users to track their real-time progress on the console's Google Maps™ display with a dynamic "runner" marker that moves from along each route. Runners experience "what the road does" as the treadmill automatically adjusts incline, and enjoy the view with Google Street View™.
The HD video visuals of the Boston Marathon are unique to the ProForm® Boston Marathon treadmill, and were shot on location on Race Day 2012. For the myriad of other maps runners can draw, the treadmill's live internet connection to Google Maps™ powers the visuals on the tablet console with Map, Satellite, Hybrid, Earth Views, and Street View, where available.
At the conclusion of each run, workout results are automatically uploaded to a personal profile page at iFit.com.
Road runners subject themselves to merciless impact. Treadmill-only training leaves many runners unprepared for the abuse of a road run.
Runner's Flex cushioning, exclusive to the ProForm® Boston Marathon treadmill, gives the best of both worlds. The cushioning has an on-off function that simulates the real road when off and a cushioned Reflex Deck cushioning when on.
